Then ask the retailer which claim applies to the specific item.

Shop by maker and material

For ceramics, textiles, jewelry, stationery, food or art, read the maker card and ask where the piece was designed and produced. “Local,” “handmade” and “small batch” can describe different stages. If those distinctions matter to the recipient, do not infer them from a shelf label or borough motif.

Make the gift usable

Set a budget that includes tax, wrapping and shipping. For clothing or jewelry, confirm size and exchange rules. For food, check ingredients, allergens, storage and best-by information. For ceramics or home goods, ask whether the material is food-safe, dishwasher-safe or purely decorative only when the maker provides that guidance.

Review return and exchange terms before removing tags or requesting gift wrap. Artist-made, customized, food and sale items may be final sale. Ask whether a gift receipt is available and whether the recipient can exchange at another location.

Plan around stock, not a universal list

Maker inventory changes quickly, especially around holidays and markets. Check the retailer's current hours and product availability; online inventory may not match a physical location. If timing is tight, reserve the item or buy a store gift card only after confirming its expiration, location and use terms.
